A DSG, or direct shift gearbox, automates two separate "manual" gearboxes (and clutches) contained within one housing and working as one unit.

Knowing how to replace a clutch in a DSG is one thing, but knowing the detailed internal workings is another. The pulled apart DSG they are looking at in the image, suffered a clutch pack failure and it was evident that a lack of DSG servicing at adequate intervals contributed to its failure.

The clutch packs are submerged in DSG oil and if not properly maintained can result in a loss of lubrication and they subsequently suffer more torque slip under load causing premature wear.
